"World War II still yields many films, even 75 years later. 'Der Hauptmann' presents a different story about this period by following a German soldier fighting for survival. He finds a Nazi captain's uniform and assumes the position of superior as soon as he is in possession of the garments. It is very interesting to analyze how he grows from the moment he decides to embody this character. Another differential of 'Der Hauptmann' is that most of the movies about World War II do not show the perspective of the Nazis. Director and screenwriter Robert Schwentke, known in the United States for directing 'Red: Retired and Dangerous' and 'R.I.P.D: Agents of the Beyond', brings a simple and natural story, without pointing out who the enemy is or portraying the Germans as the villains - because we know that not everyone who fought in the war ed the Nazi regime."
